Objective
The objective of this lesson is to improve reading comprehension and critical thinking skills through engaging activities related to the student's interests in basketball, video games, clothes, shoes, swimming, hanging out with friends, and anime.
Materials and Prep
- Reading materials related to basketball, video games, fashion, swimming, and anime
- Writing materials (paper and pen/pencil)
- Computer or tablet with internet access (optional)
Activities
-
Reading and Summarizing: Choose an article or blog post about one of the student's interests (e.g., basketball) and have them read it. Then, ask them to write a brief summary of what they learned from the reading. Encourage them to include key details and main ideas.
-
Comparing and Contrasting: Provide the student with two articles or blog posts related to different interests (e.g., video games and fashion). Ask them to read both and create a Venn diagram or a written comparison highlighting the similarities and differences between the two topics.
-
Creating a Character: Have the student imagine a character who embodies their interests (e.g., a basketball player who loves video games and anime). Ask them to write a short story or a character profile describing the character's background, personality, and how their interests influence their actions and decisions.
-
Research and Presentation: Allow the student to choose one of their interests (e.g., swimming) and research its history, benefits, and famous athletes or figures associated with it. Then, have them create a short presentation to share their findings with you or their friends/family.
