Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to create your own artwork.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Blank paper
- Coloring materials (crayons, colored pencils, or markers)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Number Patterns
Start by drawing a simple shape, like a square or a triangle, on your paper. Then, using numbers, create a pattern within the shape. For example, you can start with the number 1 in one corner and increase by 2 as you move along the sides of the shape. Fill in the rest of the shape with the pattern until you reach the starting point again. Once you have created the pattern, color in the shape using your coloring materials.
-
Activity 2: Symmetry
Draw a line down the middle of your paper to create a line of symmetry. Start by drawing a simple image on one side of the line. Then, using arithmetic operations, replicate the same image on the other side of the line. For example, if you drew a flower on one side, you can use addition or subtraction to create a similar flower on the other side. Once you have completed the symmetrical image, color it in.
-
Activity 3: Grid Art
Create a grid on your paper by drawing evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines. Each cell in the grid will represent a small area to draw in. Use arithmetic operations to decide what to draw in each cell. For example, you can assign a number to each cell and then use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to determine what image or pattern to draw. Once you have filled in the entire grid, color in your artwork.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
- "Number patterns are sequences of numbers that follow a specific rule or pattern."
- "Symmetry is when an image or object can be divided into two equal halves that are mirror images of each other."
- "Grids are helpful tools that can be used to organize information or create art."
