Spiritual Science: The Magic of Intention & Candle Making
A hands-on exploration of focus, color symbolism, and mindful goal-setting for young learners.
β¨ Materials Needed
- Beeswax sheets (natural or colored - 1 or 2 sheets per candle)
- Cotton candle wicking (cut to fit the sheet height plus 1 inch)
- A small selection of dried herbs/spices (like lavender for peace, cinnamon powder for energy, or rosemary for memory)
- A small bottle of olive oil or jojoba oil
- A blunt butter knife or craft stick (for scoring/pressing)
- Colored markers and paper (for the "Spellbook" or Intention Journal)
- A safe, heat-proof plate or holder to place the candle on
- An adult assistant (absolutely mandatory for lighting any match or lighter!)
π― Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:
- Explain how colors can represent different emotions and goals ( correspondences).
- Construct a handmade rolled beeswax candle safely.
- Formulate a clear, positive "intention" (a goal or wish) and pair it with matching colors and herbs.
- Demonstrate fire safety rules under adult supervision.
π Success Criteria
You will know you have succeeded when you:
- Roll a neat, sturdy candle that can stand up on its own.
- Write down one clear wish or goal (your intention) in your journal.
- Explain why you chose your specific candle colors and decorations.
- Can list the 3 Golden Rules of candle fire safety.
π Part 1: The Hook & The Magic of Focus (10 Mins)
"Have you ever blown out the candles on your birthday cake? When you do that, what is the very first thing everyone tells you to do? That's rightβmake a wish! Did you know that when you do that, you are doing a very old kind of 'candle magic'? People all over the world, for thousands of years, have used the warm glow of candles to help them focus their minds on their biggest dreams, hopes, and goals. Today, we aren't just going to burn a candle; we are going to build our very own magical tool from scratch to help us focus on a special wish!"
Let's brainstorm: If you could have one superpower, or if you have one big goal for this week (like finishing a tough book, being extra kind to a sibling, or finding peaceful energy), what would it be? Write this "big wish" down in one sentence on a piece of paper. This is your Intention.
π¨ Part 2: The Language of Color & Plants (15 Mins)
In candle magic, we use symbols. A symbol is something you can see that stands for something you can feel or think about. Colors and plants are powerful symbols! Let's explore what they mean:
Courage, love, friendship, and strong energy!
Joy, bright ideas, happiness, and learning things quickly.
Growth, luck, nature, and healing body and mind.
Peace, deep sleep, imagination, and wisdom.
πΏ Plant Magic (Herbs)
We can also "dress" our candle with tiny pinches of dried herbs to give it an extra boost:
- Lavender: Good for relaxing, calming down, and sweet dreams.
- Cinnamon: Adds speed, power, and cozy warm feelings.
- Rosemary: Helps with remembering things and keeping away bad moods.
π‘οΈ The Three Golden Rules of Candle Safety
- Rule 1: Never, ever light a candle yourself. Only an adult is allowed to strike a match or use a lighter.
- Rule 2: Never leave a burning candle alone. If you leave the room, your candle must be blown out first!
- Rule 3: Keep it clear. The candle must sit on a flat, heat-proof plate, away from curtains, papers, or anything breezy.
π―οΈ Part 3: Rolling Your Candle (15 Mins)
Now, let's build the candle together. Follow these step-by-step instructions. (Parents: assist with measuring and pressing if needed!)
- Choose your color sheet: Pick the color sheet that matches your wish or intention from Part 1.
- Measure the Wick: Lay the wick along the edge of your beeswax sheet. The wick should hang off one end by about 1 inch (this is the top where the adult will light it!). Cut the wick to size.
- The First Roll: Place your wick right at the very edge of the sheet. Gently fold the edge of the wax over the wick. Use your fingers to press down and crimp it in place. It should look like a snug blanket wrapped around the wick.
- Roll It Tight: Roll the wax sheet forward slowly and evenly. Make sure to keep it tight so there are no empty air pockets inside. Use the palms of your hands to roll it like a playdough snake!
- Seal the Edge: Once you reach the end, press your thumb along the seam to smooth the edge down so your candle doesn't unroll. Stand it up on the plate to make sure it stands straight. Congratulations, you made a candle!
π§ͺ Part 4: Dressing the Candle & Setting Your Intention (15 Mins)
Now you will decorate ("dress") your candle and prepare your magic space.
Your Tasks:
- Take a tiny drop of your olive or jojoba oil onto your fingertip. Rub it gently up and down the outside of your candle. (This makes it sticky enough for herbs to cling to!)
- Sprinkle a very tiny pinch of your chosen herb onto a plate.
- Roll your oiled candle through the herbs so just a few small pieces stick to the outside of the wax. (Note: Do not put herbs near the wick, only on the sides of the candle so they don't catch fire!)
- Place your decorated candle firmly into its heat-proof holder.
- On a fresh page in your journal, write down your wish in big, beautiful letters. Draw a border of symbols around it (like stars, hearts, or lightning bolts).
π₯ The Intention Ceremony (5 Mins)
Now, we bring everything together: our mind, our hands, and our physical symbols.
Step 1: Read your intention out loud to your adult assistant.
"I am lighting this candle to bring more [joy/peace/courage] into my life."
Step 2: Your adult assistant will safely strike a match and light the wick.
Step 3: Sit quietly and watch the candle flame dance for 1 full minute. Breathe in slowly through your nose, and out through your mouth. Imagine your wish coming true with every flicker of the flame.
Step 4: Blow the candle out carefully, knowing your intention is set in your mind and ready to go out into the universe!
π Reflection & Assessment
Let's double-check what we learned today! Answer these quick questions out loud with your teacher or parent:
- What is an "intention" and why do we use candles to help us set them?
- If you wanted to do a candle ritual to help you feel brave before a big swim lesson, what color candle would you use? What herb might you use?
- Can you tell me the Three Golden Rules of candle fire safety?
π Tailor This Lesson
For younger siblings or struggling learners: Pre-roll the candle for them, and let them focus solely on selecting the colors of decorations and drawing their intention in their journal.
For older or advanced students: Research the science of combustion! Explain what wax actually is (hydrocarbons) and how the heat of the flame vaporizes the wax to keep the flame burning. Discuss the history of candle-making from tallow to beeswax.
