Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills while incorporating your interest in Fortnite.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Fornite-themed flashcards (you can create your own by printing out pictures of Fortnite characters or items)
  • Fornite-themed dice (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Start by playing a quick game of Fortnite-themed arithmetic flashcards. Shuffle the flashcards and hold them up one by one. You can either create your own flashcards or use an online resource. For each flashcard, ask the student to solve the arithmetic problem on the card. If they answer correctly, they earn a point. Keep track of the points earned throughout the game.
  2. Fortnite Math Challenges: Provide the student with a set of Fortnite-themed math challenges. These can include addition, subtraction, and counting problems related to Fortnite. For example, you can ask them to count the number of pickaxes in a given picture, or solve an addition problem related to the number of eliminations a player made in a game. Encourage the student to solve the challenges using their arithmetic skills.
  3. Bonus Activity: If you have a Fortnite-themed dice, you can use it to create a fun dice game. Assign different arithmetic operations to each side of the dice (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Roll the dice and ask the student to solve an arithmetic problem based on the operation shown on the dice. They earn points for correct answers.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Math is an important skill that helps us solve problems and count things."
  • "In Fortnite, we can use math to help us keep track of points and make strategic decisions."
  • "Addition means putting two or more numbers together to find the total. For example, if we have 2 apples and 3 bananas, we can add them together to find out how many fruits we have in total."
  • "Subtraction means taking away one number from another. For example, if we have 5 bullets and we use 3, we can subtract 3 from 5 to find out how many bullets we have left."
  • "Counting is a way to keep track of how many things there are. We can count the number of players, weapons, or buildings in Fortnite to help us strategize."
  • "By practicing math skills, we can become better at solving problems and making decisions, both in Fortnite and in real life."
