Rainbow Energy: A Fun Guide to Chakras and Balance

Lesson Overview

Age Group: 7 Years Old (Adaptable for Kindergarten to 3rd Grade)

Subject: Mindfulness, Self-Regulation, and Wellness

Duration: 45–60 minutes

Core Concept: Understanding chakras as "energy wheels" inside the body that connect to our feelings, and learning simple tools (breathing, movement, and color visualization) to keep them bright, clean, and balanced.

Materials Needed

  • A printed drawing or simple outline of a human body (on white paper)
  • 7 colored markers, crayons, or colored pencils (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo/Dark Blue, Violet/Purple)
  • 7 small colorful objects (e.g., colored craft pom-poms, painted stones, colorful buttons, or toy blocks matching the chakra colors)
  • A yoga mat, soft rug, or comfortable pillow to sit on
  • A bell, chime, or a smartphone/device to play soft, calming nature sounds

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the 7 main chakras by their colors and locations on the body.
  2. Explain in simple terms how different energy centers relate to their feelings (e.g., green heart chakra = love).
  3. Demonstrate a simple "Rainbow Cleansing Breath" and physical stretch to help restore emotional balance.

Success Criteria

The student will know they have succeeded when they can:

  • Place the 7 colored objects in the correct order on their "Chakra Body Map."
  • Act out at least three physical poses/breaths that correspond to different energy centers.
  • Describe how they feel before and after the balancing exercises.

1. Introduction & Hook (10 Minutes)

The Hook: The Hidden Rainbow

(Have the student sit comfortably on their cushion. Play soft music in the background.)

Teacher/Parent Talk: "Did you know that you have a secret rainbow hidden inside your body? It's true! But it’s not made of paint or crayons—it’s made of energy! Imagine seven little spinning wheels of light stacked up from the bottom of your spine all the way to the top of your head. In a special language called Sanskrit, these spinning wheels are called Chakras (pronounced CHAH-kruhs), which means 'wheels.' When our wheels are spinning smoothly, we feel happy, healthy, and strong. But sometimes, if we get scared, angry, or tired, the wheels can get a little dusty or spin too slowly. Today, we are going to learn how to polish our energy wheels so they shine super bright!"

Active Discussion

Ask: "How do you feel today? Do you feel energetic like a bright yellow sun, quiet like a blue sky, or maybe a little grumpy or tired?"

(Allow the student to share. Explain that all feelings are okay, and our energy wheels can help us manage those feelings.)

2. Body of the Lesson: Content & Practice (25 Minutes)

Part A: Meet the Energy Wheels (I Do)

The teacher models the colors, locations, and meanings of the 7 chakras using simple, child-friendly terms. Point to each area on your own body as you speak.

Chakra Name & Color Where is it? What does it help us feel? (7-year-old translation)
1. Red (Root) Base of spine / Hips Safe, strong, and grounded like a big oak tree.
2. Orange (Sacral) Just below the belly button Creative and happy, like playing, drawing, and dancing.
3. Yellow (Solar Plexus) The tummy area Brave, proud, and confident, like a bright superhero.
4. Green (Heart) The center of the chest Loving, kind, and friendly to ourselves and others.
5. Blue (Throat) The throat Honest and expressive, helping us speak our truth clearly.
6. Indigo (Third Eye) Between the eyebrows Wise and imaginative, helping us dream and think.
7. Violet/Purple (Crown) Very top of the head Peaceful and connected to the whole universe.

Part B: The "Rainbow Polish" Movement & Breath (We Do)

Now, guide the student to physically connect with these areas. Do these movements together.

  1. The Red Root Grow: Stand up tall like a mountain. Stomp your feet gently on the floor.
Say: "I am safe, I am strong."
  2. The Orange Creative Hula: Place your hands on your hips and gently swirl your hips in a circle like a hula-hoop.
Say: "I am happy and creative."
  3. The Yellow Sun Shine: Take a deep breath in, raise your arms high and wide like rays of the sun, and puff out your chest.
Say: "I am brave and powerful."
  4. The Green Heart Hug: Wrap your arms around yourself in a giant, cozy self-hug, squeezing gently.
Say: "I am loved and I am kind."
  5. The Blue Hum: Take a deep breath in, gently cover your ears, and make a humming sound like a happy bumblebee on the exhale ("Mmmmmmm"). Feel the vibration in your throat.
    Say: "My voice matters."
  6. The Indigo Star Dust: Close your eyes, tap the space between your eyebrows gently with one finger, and imagine a night sky full of stars.
Say: "I can dream big dreams."
  7. The Violet Crown Balloon: Reach up high, touch the very top of your head, then sweep your arms down around your sides, drawing a giant purple bubble of light all around your body.
    Say: "I am peaceful."

Part C: Map Your Rainbow (You Do)

The student works independently to demonstrate what they've learned by creating a physical representation.

  • Task: Give the student the printed body outline and the 7 colorful items (pom-poms, blocks, or stones).
  • Instruction: Have the student place the colored items on the correct spots of the body outline from bottom to top to "align" their map's chakras.
  • Creative Twist: Once they place the objects, they can use their crayons or markers to draw glowing, spinning circles of the matching colors on the paper and write (or dictate) one word next to each color (e.g., Red = Strong, Green = Love).

3. Conclusion, Reflection & Assessment (10 Minutes)

The Cleansing Bell Meditation (Formative Assessment)

Ask the student to lay down comfortably on their back (Savasana/Corpse pose). Place one of their colorful objects (like a lightweight green pom-pom or soft toy) on their heart or belly.

Guidance: "Close your eyes. When I ring the chime/bell, I want you to take a deep, slow breath in through your nose, filling up your belly so the object rises up toward the sky. When you breathe out through your mouth, let the object sink back down. Imagine a gentle, warm rainbow light washing over you from your toes all the way to your head, wiping away any dust on your energy wheels. Imagine they are all spinning beautifully, glowing with their perfect colors."

Ring the chime. Let them breathe quietly for 1-2 minutes.

Recap Questions

  • "Where is your heart chakra, and what color is it?"
  • "If you are feeling a little scared or anxious, which color chakra can you think about to help you feel strong and grounded like a tree?" *(Red / Root)*
  • "How does your body feel now compared to when we first started our lesson?"

Adaptations & Differentiation

For Struggling or Kinesthetic Learners (Scaffolding):

  • Focus strictly on the colors and physical locations rather than the Sanskrit names or abstract concepts.
  • Use physical color cards. Have the child run and touch something in the room that matches the chakra color you call out, then do the corresponding physical stretch.

For Advanced Learners (Extensions):

  • Introduce the traditional Sanskrit names for the chakras (Muladhara, Svadhisthana, Manipura, Anahata, Vishuddha, Ajna, Sahasrara).
  • Have them learn a specific yoga pose for each chakra (e.g., Tree Pose for Root, Cobra Pose for Heart, Shoulder Stand or Fish Pose for Throat).
  • Ask them to write a short story or draw a comic strip about a character whose "energy wheels" get out of balance (e.g., a dragon who loses his yellow spark of bravery) and how they get it back.
