  • Success Criteria:
    • Show respect by bowing instantly when the "Focus" command is given.
    • Perform a front stance with the front knee bent and back leg straight.
    • Execute a front snap kick and return to balance without falling over.
    • Safely execute a shoulder roll on a soft mat.

WEEK 1: FOUNDATIONS & FOCUS

Wednesday: Day 1 - The Way of the Warrior (Stances & Respect)

1. Introduction & Bowing Etiquette (10 Minutes)

  • The Hook: "Welcome, Future Ninjas! Today we begin our journey to earn our black belts in focus and self-control. Did you know a real karate master's strongest weapon isn't their kick? It's their mind and their respect!"
  • Activity - Respectful Names: Go around the room. Each student shares their name with a positive, respectful adjective matching their first letter (e.g., "Respectful Ridhima," "Courageous Caleb," "Awesome Alex").
  • I Do / We Do / You Do (Bowing):
    • I Do: Instructor demonstrates "Chereot" (Attention - heels together, hands at sides) and "Kyong-ye" (Bow - bending 45 degrees at the waist, eyes looking down respectfully).
    • We Do: Practice together on a count of 1-2-3.
    • You Do: Call out "Attention!" randomly to see if students can snap into a perfect bow instantly.

2. Warmup & Korean Counting (10 Minutes)

  • Jog Around the Room: 2 minutes of light jogging. Introduce "Freeze!" commands to practice instant stopping.
  • Korean Counting Lesson: Teach numbers 1 to 10:
    1. Hana (Hah-nah)
    2. Dul (Dool)
    3. Set (Set)
    4. Net (Net)
    5. Dasot (Dah-sut)
    6. Yasot (Yah-sut)
    7. Ilgop (Eel-gup)
    8. Yodol (Yo-dul)
    9. Ahope (Ah-hope)
    10. Yeol (Yul)
  • Korean Jumping Jacks: 10 repetitions, counting out loud in Korean together.
  • Joint Mobilization: 10 forward arm circles, 10 backward arm circles, 10 trunk twists.
  • Fun Starter Activities:
    • Spits Practice: Safely slide legs out wide to challenge flexibility. Hold for 15 seconds.
    • Handstand Prep: "Donkey kicks" against a safe wall or on the mat to build shoulder strength.

3. Skill Building: Chumbi & Front Stance (15 Minutes)

  • Instruction: "Chumbi" (Ready Stance):
    • Explanation: Feet shoulder-width apart, fists in front of the belt level. This means "I am focused and ready for action."
  • Instruction: "Front Stance":
    • Analogies: "Imagine your feet are on train tracks, not a tightrope! Bend your front knee so you can't see your toes. Keep your back leg straight like a wooden board."
    • Practice: Step forward into front stance, step back into Chumbi. Repeat 10 times per leg.

--- 5-MINUTE WATER BREAK & DISCIPLINE TALK ---
Talk Topic: "What is self-discipline? It means doing what you are supposed to do, even when no one is watching!"

4. Active Game & Practice (15 Minutes)

  • Game 1: Stance Red Light, Green Light: Students walk or jog forward. When the instructor yells "Red Light!", they must snap immediately into a perfect, frozen Front Stance. If they wobble, they take one step back.
  • Game 2: Pop-Up / King of the Mat: Students lie flat on their stomachs. On the whistle, they must "pop up" as fast as possible into a strong Chumbi stance with a loud shout ("Kihap!"). The fastest, most stable student earns the title "King/Queen of the Mat" for that round.

5. Cool Down & Reflection (5 Minutes)

  • Stretches: Quad stretch (holding foot behind), seated hamstring stretches, snake pose (cobra stretch to stretch the core).
  • Formative Assessment: Ask students: "Show me what Chumbi looks like. What does Chumbi mean?"

Thursday: Day 2 - Defense & Power (Blocks & Punches)

1. Warmup & Stance Review (10 Minutes)

  • Light jog, 10 Korean Jumping Jacks, dynamic leg swings.
  • Quick review of Bowing, Chumbi, and Front Stance.

2. Skill Building: Rising Block & Middle Punch (15 Minutes)

  • Rising Block (High Block):
    • Analogy: "Imagine someone is trying to drop a water balloon on your head! Your arm must make an umbrella roof over your forehead at an angle so the balloon slides off."
    • Practice: Alternating arms in Chumbi stance. Emphasize clearing the forehead.
  • Middle Punch:
    • Analogy: "Your hands live in 'chambers' on your hips like two tucked-in sleeping bags. When you punch, one shoots straight out to the center of your chest while the other zips back to its sleeping bag!"
    • Practice: 20 punches slowly, then 20 fast punches with a shout ("Kihap") on every 10th punch.
  • Pad Work (Two Lines): Instructors hold punching targets. Students take turns stepping forward in a front stance and striking the pad with 3 consecutive middle punches.

--- 5-MINUTE WATER BREAK & FOCUS TALK ---
Talk Topic: "Focus means keeping your eyes, ears, and mind on what you are doing. How do we show focus at home and school?"

3. Skill Building & Game: Low Block & Balance (15 Minutes)

  • Low Block:
    • Analogy: "Swipe your arm across your leg like you are brushing off a pesky mosquito!"
    • Practice: Chamber hand at the opposite ear, sweep down to block low attacks.
  • Game: Crane Balance Chicken Fight (Safe Version):
    • Students stand on one leg (Crane stance) with arms folded safely across their chest. On "Go," they hop around and try to gently nudge their opponent to make them lose balance and touch their second foot down. No pushing with hands allowed! Focuses on core strength and balance.

4. Cool Down (5 Minutes)

  • Seated butterfly stretch, shoulder stretch across the chest, deep breathing.

Friday: Day 3 - Agility & Spatial Awareness

1. Warmup & Block Review (10 Minutes)

  • Fast-paced warmup: High knees, butt kicks, arm circles.
  • "Simon Says" using Rising Block, Low Block, Middle Punch, and Front Stance.

2. Skill Building: Precision Jumping & Footwork (15 Minutes)

  • Landing Mechanics: Teach the "Ninja Landing." Jump and land softly on the balls of the feet with knees bent, making absolutely zero sound.
  • Blue Mat Jumps: Lay out a long blue gymnastics mat.
    • Level 1: Two-foot hops across the mat.
    • Level 2: Leap across "lava zones" marked by tape, landing in a solid Front Stance.

--- 5-MINUTE WATER BREAK ---

3. Balance & Obstacle Course (15 Minutes)

  • The Ninja Balance Challenge:
    • Lay down a line of floor tape (or balance beam). Students must walk heel-to-toe while executing slow, controlled middle punches. If they step off, they do 3 jumping jacks and try again.
  • Agility Obstacle Course:
    1. Start in Chumbi.
    2. Perform 5 Middle Punches.
    3. Run and leap over the blue mat obstacle (Ninja Landing).
    4. Scurry through a low-block tunnel (crawl under pool noodles held by instructors).
    5. Finish with a loud bow!

4. Cool Down & Weekend Challenge (5 Minutes)

  • Gentle stretching of calves and hamstrings.
  • Weekend Challenge: Instruct students to practice bowing to their parents before meals to show respect and gratitude.

WEEK 2: AGILITY & ADVANCED SKILLS

Wednesday: Day 4 - The Art of Falling (Ninja Rolls)

1. Warmup & Safety Prep (10 Minutes)

  • Standard warmup: Jogging, Korean counting jumping jacks, trunk twists.
  • Tuck-and-Roll Prep: Sit on bottom, hug knees to chest, rock back onto shoulders and back up to sitting without letting the head touch the floor.

2. Skill Building: Ninja Rolls (Shoulder Rolls) (15 Minutes)

  • Step-by-Step Instruction (I Do / We Do / You Do):
    • Step 1: Kneel on the soft blue mat. Make a diamond shape with hands on the mat.
    • Step 2: Tuck the chin deeply to the chest and look at the belly button (keeps neck safe).
    • Step 3: Slide one arm through the "window" of the other arm, lowering the shoulder to the mat.
    • Step 4: Push with the feet to roll over the shoulder, NOT the head or neck.
  • Practice in Lines: Instructors guide each student individually down the blue mat, helping support their hips to ensure they roll straight over their shoulder safely.

--- 5-MINUTE WATER BREAK & COURAGE TALK ---
Talk Topic: "Why do we learn to roll? Because when we fall in life, we need to know how to roll with it, get back up, and keep trying!"

3. Active Games (15 Minutes)

  • Game 1: Night at the Museum:
    • The instructor (The Curator) turns their back. Students (The Statues) move toward them using Ninja Rolls and crawling movements. When the Curator turns around, the Statues must instantly freeze in a strong Karate Block or Stance. Anyone caught moving goes back to the start line.
  • Game 2: Chicken Fight (Consolidation):
    • Repeat the one-legged balance challenge from Week 1 to track improvement in leg strength and stability.

4. Cool Down (5 Minutes)

  • Cobra stretch, child's pose (excellent for relaxing the spine after rolling), deep breathing.

Thursday: Day 5 - Flying Feet (Basic Kicks)

1. Warmup & Leg Loosening (10 Minutes)

  • Dynamic warmup: High kicks to the hands (Front Rising Kick) to stretch the hamstrings, light jog, 15 jumping jacks.

2. Skill Building: Front Snap Kick & Roundhouse Kick (15 Minutes)

  • Front Snap Kick (Ap Chagi):
    • Four-Part Formula: 1. Chamber (lift knee up high); 2. Snap (extend foot out like a whip, striking with the ball of the foot); 3. Re-chamber (pull knee back up); 4. Plant (set foot down in control).
    • Practice: Holding onto a wall/chair for balance, execute 10 slow kicks per leg. Then try without holding on.
  • Front Roundhouse Kick (Dollyo Chagi):
    • Analogy: "Pivot your standing foot so your heel points at your target. Pivot your hip and snap your kick sideways like a tail swinging!"
    • Practice: Step-by-step pivots on the floor.
  • Pad Kicking (Ranking in Line):
    • Students line up. Instructors hold target pads at waist height. Students run up, perform a high-energy Front Snap Kick, re-chamber, and land in a strong Chumbi stance.

--- 5-MINUTE WATER BREAK & PERSEVERANCE TALK ---
Talk Topic: "Perseverance means never giving up, even when a kick is hard to learn. If we fall, we stand up 7 times and get up 8!"

3. Kicking Drills & Combo Practice (15 Minutes)

  • Combination Work: Front Stance -> Rising Block -> Middle Punch -> Front Snap Kick.
    • Practice this simple flow slowly, then build speed. This builds bilateral coordination.

4. Cool Down (5 Minutes)

  • Deep leg splits stretch, quad stretch, calf stretch.

Friday: Day 6 - Graduation Day & Celebration!

1. Warmup & Ultimate Review (10 Minutes)

  • Fast, fun warmup incorporating all skills learned: "Do 3 punches, 2 kicks, 1 ninja roll!" on command.

2. The Junior Ninja Evaluation (15 Minutes)

  • Formative Assessment Performance:
    • Group students together. Instructors call out commands: "Show me Front Stance! Show me Low Block! Show me your best Front Snap Kick!"
    • This is structured as a positive, high-energy demonstration of skills rather than a stressful test. Every student is cheered on.

--- 5-MINUTE WATER BREAK & PREPARATION FOR GRADUATION ---

3. Graduation Games & Ceremony (25 Minutes)

  • Game: Sensei Says: A fast-paced martial arts version of Simon Says using all terminology learned (Chereot, Chumbi, Kyong-ye, Rising Block, Front Kick).
  • Award Ceremony:
    • Call each student up one by one.
    • Student must bow respectfully, walk up to the instructor, accept their "Junior Ninja Certificate," shake hands (or bow), and bow to the class.
    • Class cheers wildly for every graduate!
  • The Reward: Celebrate with delicious donuts and juice/water!

4. Final Bow Out (5 Minutes)

  • Gather in a circle one last time.
  • Instructor leads a reflection: "What was your favorite part of the summer program? How will you keep being a respectful ninja at home?"
  • Final, respectful group bow ("Kyong-ye"). Program complete!

Universal Adaptations & Differentiation Strategies

  • For Younger Students (6-7 years old): Use color-coded floor tape for foot placement during stances. Use pool noodles instead of rigid kick pads to minimize impact and fear of getting hurt.
  • For Older/Advanced Students (9-11 years old): Increase challenge by combining moves (e.g., jump-front kick, or low block/middle punch combinations). Have them lead the Korean counting during warmups to build leadership skills.
  • For Homeschool/One-on-One Settings: Replace group games with time-trial challenges (e.g., "Can you beat your own record of staying frozen in front stance?"). The parent can act as the training partner and pad-holder.
