The Power of One: How One Small Action Makes a Difference

Materials Needed

  • Paper or a notebook
  • Pencil, colored pencils, or markers
  • 10–20 small objects, such as coins, buttons, blocks, or beans
  • A timer or clock
  • Optional: calculator, tablet, or computer

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify one realistic action that could improve a home, school, or community.

Introduction: The One-Thing Challenge

Hook: Ask, “What could happen if you did one helpful action every day for a whole month?”

Invite the learner to choose one action, such as:

  • Reading one page each day
  • Picking up one piece of litter
  • Saving one coin
  • Doing one kind thing
  • Practicing one new word

Have the learner predict what might happen after one week, one month, or one year.

Tell the learner: “Today we will explore how one small action can grow into a much larger result. We will use math to make predictions, test ideas, and design a real-life action plan.”

  • Result: What happens because of an action.
  • Pattern: A repeated or predictable sequence.

Part 1: I Do—Modeling the Power of One

Say: “Suppose I save one coin every day. How many coins will I save in one week?”

Model the thinking:

1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 7

Then show the multiplication sentence:

7 days × 1 coin each day = 7 coins

Continue with a larger example:

“What if I save three coins each day for seven days?”

7 × 3 = 21 coins

Explain that multiplication helps us find the total when the same amount is repeated.

  3. After five rounds, count the objects.
  4. Repeat the activity by adding two objects during each round.
  5. Compare the results.

Discuss:

  • What changed when we added two objects instead of one?
  • How could this idea apply to practicing a skill or helping others?

Part 3: We Do—Real-World Problem Solving

Read each situation aloud. Solve together, then explain the strategy.

  1. Jordan reads 4 pages every day for 5 days. How many pages does Jordan read?

  2. A family saves $2 each day for 7 days. How much money do they save?

  3. A garden produces 3 tomatoes each week for 4 weeks. How many tomatoes are produced?

  4. A learner practices piano for 10 minutes each day for 6 days. How many minutes do they practice?

  5. One person plants 2 flowers. Three friends each plant 2 flowers. How many flowers are planted altogether?

Answers: 20 pages, $14, 12 tomatoes, 60 minutes, and 8 flowers.

Part 4: You Do—Create a “One Small Action” Plan

Have the learner choose one action from the list or invent an action of their own.

  • Read one page or one chapter each day.
  • Save one coin each day.
  • Pick up one piece of litter each day.
  • Practice one new word in another language each day.
  • Give one compliment each day.
  • Draw one small part of a larger picture each day.
  • Do one helpful household task each day.

The learner completes the following planning chart:

Encourage the learner to present the plan as a poster, comic strip, short speech, digital slide, or recorded explanation.
