Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve problems related to dog breeds.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Access to the internet or books about dog breeds
- Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Activities
-
Research Different Dog Breeds:
Use the internet or books to research different dog breeds. Make a list of at least five dog breeds that you find interesting.
-
Calculate Average Weight:
Find the average weight of the five dog breeds you listed. Add up the weights of the dogs and divide the sum by 5 to find the average weight.
-
Compare Dog Heights:
Choose two dog breeds from your list and compare their heights. Subtract the height of one breed from the height of the other breed to find the difference in height.
-
Calculate Dog Years:
Research the average lifespan of different dog breeds. Choose two dog breeds from your list and calculate how many "dog years" they would be equivalent to in human years. Multiply the average lifespan of each breed by 7 to find the equivalent human years.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun exploring dog breeds and using our math skills to solve arithmetic problems related to them."
- "We will start by researching different dog breeds and making a list of the ones we find interesting."
- "Next, we will calculate the average weight of the dog breeds on our list by adding up their weights and dividing the sum by the number of breeds."
- "Then, we will compare the heights of two dog breeds by subtracting the height of one breed from the height of the other."
- "Finally, we will calculate 'dog years' by multiplying the average lifespan of different dog breeds by 7 to find their equivalent in human years."
