Number Adventure: Exploring Big Groups
Materials Needed
- Large handful of small objects, such as blocks, buttons, toy animals, or cereal pieces
- Paper plates, bowls, or small containers
- Number cards from 1 to 10
- Paper and crayons or washable markers
- Optional: calculator for the adult
- Optional: stuffed animals or toy figures for pretend play
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, the child will be able to:
- Count objects carefully to 10 or beyond, according to readiness.

Introduction: The Big Number Mystery
Hook: Show the child a few toy animals or blocks and say:

“I made 2 groups. Each group has 3 blocks. The groups are the same. Let’s count them all: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. There are 6 blocks altogether.”
Use simple language:
- “A group is a set of things together.”
- “Equal groups have the same number.”
- “Multiplication is a quick way to talk about equal groups.”
Do not require the child to memorize a multiplication equation. If helpful, say:
“Two groups of three makes six.”

Part 2: We Do — Build a Toy Shop
Invite the child to help organize a pretend toy shop.
- Choose 2–4 containers.

- Place the same number of objects in every container.
- Count all the objects together.
Use examples such as:
- 2 groups of 2 toy animals
- 3 groups of 3 blocks
- 4 groups of 2 buttons
Use a think-pair-share variation:

Watch for whether the child:

Build equal towers. For example, make 4 towers with 3 blocks in each tower. Compare their heights.
Choice D: Draw the Groups
Have the child draw circles for groups and add dots, stars, or simple shapes inside each circle.
Ask the child to complete the sentence:

Feedback
Give specific encouragement:
- “You put one block in each bowl. That helped make the groups fair.”
- “You counted each object once.”
- “You noticed that this group had one more. Good comparing!”
Part 4: Movement Game — Group Up!
Play a quick movement game to connect numbers with the body.
- Call out a number of groups, such as “2 groups!”
- Call out how many people or toys belong in each group, such as “3 in each group!”
- Have the child organize toys, stuffed animals, family members, or pretend figures into equal groups.
- Count everyone or everything together.
For one child, the adult can use stuffed animals or toy figures. The child can also make groups of movements, such as 2 sets of 3 jumps.
Connecting to the Big Numbers
Explain in simple terms:
“The numbers 198,766 and 667,891 are much bigger than our toy groups. The same idea still works: multiplication talks about equal groups. We can start with small groups and grow our number-thinking little by little.”
