Ice, Water, and Steam: A Heat Adventure

Materials Needed

  • Several ice cubes
  • Two clear cups or bowls
  • Small saucepan or kettle, used only by an adult
  • Water
  • Oven mitt or thick towel
  • Tray or towel for spills
  • Paper and crayons
  • Three simple labels: Solid, Liquid, and Gas
  • Optional: timer, magnifying glass, and a camera for recording observations

Learning Objectives

  • Explain in simple words that heat can change ice into water and water into steam.

Important Safety Note

An adult must handle the hot pan, kettle, and steam. The child should never touch hot water, the pan, or steam. Keep the child several steps away from the heat source. Use words such as, “Steam is hot. We look with our eyes, but we do not touch.”

Introduction: The Ice Mystery

Hook

Show the child an ice cube and ask:

  • “What do you think will happen to this ice cube if we leave it in a warm place?”
  • “Can ice become water?”
  • “Can water become something we cannot hold?”

Say: “Today we are going to be water scientists. We will watch ice, water, and steam change.”

Solid: Ice

Explain that scientists ask questions, make guesses, watch carefully, and share what they find. Use these child-friendly words:

  1. Ask: What do we want to find out?
  2. Predict: What do we think will happen?
  3. Test: What can we do to find out?
  4. Observe: What do we see, feel, or hear safely?
  5. Share: What happened?

Part 3: I Do — Adult Demonstration

Investigation 1: Heat Turns Ice into Water

  1. Place an ice cube in a clear cup or bowl.
  2. Ask the child to make a prediction: “Will the ice stay the same, or will it change?”
  3. Place the cup in a warm room or sunny spot, away from danger.
  4. Invite the child to observe every few minutes.
  5. Point out that the ice becomes smaller and water appears.

Say: “The ice is getting heat from the room. The heat is helping the solid ice change into liquid water.”

Investigation 2: Heat Turns Water into Steam

  1. Pour a small amount of water into a saucepan or kettle.

  4. When steam rises, turn off the heat.

  4. Draw what the ice looks like at the beginning and at the end.

Choice B: Compare Warm and Cool Places

  1. Place one ice cube in a warm room and one ice cube in a cooler place.
