Evidence Detectives: Build Strong Arguments with Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning

Teach students how to analyze nonfiction arguments by identifying claims, evaluating relevant and reliable evidence, and explaining reasoning. This engaging lesson includes evidence-sorting activities, graphic organizers, writing prompts, assessments, a rubric, and differentiation strategies.

Evidence Detectives: Building Strong Arguments in Nonfiction

Materials Needed

  • Notebook or writing paper
  • Pencil, colored pencils, or highlighters
  • Two short nonfiction passages about a debatable topic, such as “Should schools have longer recess?”
  • Optional: computer or tablet for researching sources
  • Evidence Detective worksheet or a three-column chart labeled Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning
  • Sticky notes or index cards
  • Timer

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, Kayla Elizabeth will be able to:

  • Identify the claim, evidence, and reasoning in a nonfiction argument.
  • Distinguish between strong and weak evidence.
  • Explain whether evidence is relevant, reliable, and sufficient.
  • Use evidence to write a short, well-supported argument.

  • Clearly identify the author’s main claim.
  • Find at least two details that support the claim.
  • Explain why each detail is strong or weak evidence.
  • Connect the evidence to the claim using clear reasoning.
  • Write a paragraph containing a claim, relevant evidence, and an explanation.

Introduction: The Evidence Detective Mission

Hook: Tell Kayla:

“Imagine you are a detective. Someone says, ‘My neighbor’s dog is the fastest dog in town.’ Would you believe them immediately? What evidence would you need?”

Invite Kayla to suggest evidence, such as a race time, a photograph of a race, or a statement from a witness. Ask:

  • Which evidence would be most convincing?
  • Would “I just know it’s true” be strong evidence? Why or why not?
  • What makes evidence trustworthy?

Explain:

“Today, you will become an Evidence Detective. You will investigate nonfiction arguments and decide whether the evidence is strong or weak.”

Key Vocabulary

Claim
The main point or opinion an author wants readers to believe.
Evidence
Facts, statistics, examples, expert opinions, or details that support a claim.
Reasoning
An explanation showing how the evidence supports the claim.
Relevant
Closely connected to the claim.
Reliable
Trustworthy and likely to be accurate.
Sufficient
Enough evidence to make the argument convincing.

Body: Learning and Practice

Part 1: I Do — Model How to Analyze an Argument

Display or read the following short argument:

Claim: Schools should provide more outdoor learning time.

Students can learn science by observing plants, weather, and animals outside. A 2022 study from the National Learning Institute found that students who participated in weekly outdoor lessons remembered more science vocabulary than students who only studied indoors. Outdoor lessons also give students a chance to move and ask questions about the world around them.

Think aloud while analyzing the passage:

  1. Find the claim: “The claim is that schools should provide more outdoor learning time.”
  2. Find the evidence: “The study about students remembering more science vocabulary is evidence.”
  3. Check relevance: “The study is relevant because it discusses outdoor learning and student learning.”
  4. Check reliability: “The passage names a study and gives a year, which makes the evidence seem more trustworthy than an unnamed opinion.”
  5. Check sufficiency: “The author gives a study and additional examples. More evidence might make the argument even stronger, but the argument has a reasonable foundation.”
  6. Explain the reasoning: “The evidence supports the claim because it shows that outdoor learning may improve students’ learning and engagement.”

Record the analysis in a chart:

Part 2: We Do — Sort Strong and Weak Evidence

Read the following claim:

Claim: People should spend less time using their phones before bedtime.

Read each evidence card aloud. Have Kayla place each card in a “Strong Evidence,” “Weak Evidence,” or “Needs More Information” group. She should explain each choice.

  1. “My cousin says phones make it impossible to sleep.”
  2. “A sleep researcher explains that bright screens can affect the body’s sleep signals.”
  3. “A survey of 2,000 teenagers found that those who used phones for more than an hour before bed reported sleeping fewer hours.”
  4. “Phones are annoying.”
  5. “I saw a video that said phones are bad.”
  6. “People who stop using phones at 8:00 p.m. will become healthier, smarter, and happier.”

Guide Kayla to use the RRS test:

  • Relevant: Does it directly connect to the claim?
  • Reliable: Does it come from a trustworthy source or include specific information?
  • Sufficient: Is there enough evidence, or is it only one unsupported example?

Suggested discussion:

  • Cards 2 and 3 are strong because they include expert information or specific research.
  • Cards 1 and 4 are weak because they rely mainly on personal opinion.
  • Card 5 may need more information because the source and details are unclear.
  • Card 6 makes an exaggerated claim and does not provide evidence for all of its promises.

Think-Pair-Share Alternative: If another learner is available, Kayla can first decide independently, discuss her choices with the partner, and then revise one decision if the partner provides convincing reasoning. For homeschool use, Kayla can explain her thinking aloud to an adult or record a short audio response.

Part 3: You Do — Evidence Detective Investigation

Give Kayla two short nonfiction arguments. She may choose one topic or analyze both.

Passage A: Should Students Have Longer Recess?

Schools should provide longer recess periods. One school district found that students who had an additional 15 minutes of outdoor activity were more focused during afternoon lessons. Teachers also reported that students returned to class more calmly after playing outside. Longer recess may help students prepare their minds and bodies for learning.

Passage B: Should Families Grow Some of Their Own Food?

Families should grow some of their own food. My friend says gardening is fun, and I once saw a beautiful vegetable garden online. Everyone who grows vegetables will save a lot of money, become healthier, and never need to buy produce again.

Kayla should complete the following steps:

  1. Underline the claim.
  2. Circle each piece of evidence.
  3. Place a star next to the strongest evidence.
  4. Label evidence as R for relevant, R for reliable, and S for sufficient. She may use the phrase “needs more information” when appropriate.
  5. Write one sentence explaining whether the argument is strong, weak, or partly strong.
  6. Suggest one additional piece of evidence that would improve the argument.

Optional choice: Kayla may analyze a nonfiction article, advertisement, product review, documentary clip, or website instead of using the provided passages.

Part 4: You Do — Build a Strong Argument

Kayla chooses one prompt:

  • Should people have a daily screen-time limit?
  • Should schools offer more art, music, or physical education?
  • Should families reduce the amount of food they throw away?
  • Should communities create more parks?
  • Should pets be adopted from shelters whenever possible?

She writes a short argument using this organizer:

Planning Question Kayla’s Notes
What is my claim?
What is my strongest evidence?
Where did my evidence come from?
Why is my evidence relevant and reliable?
What reasoning connects my evidence to my claim?

Kayla’s paragraph should include:

  1. A clear claim.
  2. At least two pieces of evidence.
  3. An explanation of how the evidence supports the claim.
  4. A concluding sentence.

Sentence frames, if needed:

  • “I believe that __________ because __________.”
  • “One important piece of evidence is __________.”
  • “This evidence is relevant because __________.”
  • “This evidence is reliable because __________.”
  • “This supports my claim because __________.”
  • “A reader might need more information about __________.”

Formative Assessment and Feedback

  • Listen to Kayla’s explanations during the evidence sort.
  • Check whether she can distinguish a personal opinion from research-based evidence.
  • Ask her to explain the difference between relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Review her chart before she writes the final paragraph.
  • Give specific feedback using the format: “Your evidence is strong because __________. To make your argument stronger, add __________.”

Summative Assessment: Evidence Detective Report

Kayla submits:

  1. Her analysis of one nonfiction passage.
  2. Her completed claim-evidence-reasoning organizer.
  3. Her original argument paragraph.
  4. A brief reflection explaining which evidence was strongest and why.

Differentiation and Adaptations

Support for a Learner Who Needs More Scaffolding

  • Use one short paragraph at a time rather than a full article.
  • Read the passage aloud and allow Kayla to respond verbally.
  • Color-code claims in blue, evidence in green, and reasoning in orange.
  • Provide sentence frames and a completed example.
  • Begin with evidence that is obviously strong or weak before analyzing more complicated examples.
  • Allow Kayla to dictate her final paragraph or use speech-to-text.

Extension for an Advanced Learner

  • Compare two sources that make different claims about the same topic.
  • Identify possible bias, missing evidence, or misleading statistics.
  • Research the original source of a statistic and evaluate its credibility.
  • Write a counterargument and explain why the original argument is stronger or weaker.
  • Revise a weak argument by replacing opinions with specific, trustworthy evidence.

Conclusion: Case Closed

Ask Kayla to complete this verbal or written recap:

  • “A claim is __________.”

Exit Ticket: Kayla answers:
