Identifying Colors
Materials: A few safe, familiar objects in different colors, such as a red toy, a blue cup, a yellow sock, and a green book.
Goal: Your child will identify familiar colors by name and match objects that are the same color.
- Color hunt hook (4 minutes): Ask, “Can you find something red in the room?” Look together and celebrate any attempt. Repeat with one other color.
- Show it (6 minutes): Hold up two objects, such as a red toy and a blue cup. Point to each and say, “This is red. This is blue.” Invite your child to repeat the color names, without pressure.
- Do it together (8 minutes): Place three objects in front of you. Ask, “Which one is yellow?” Help your child point to or pick up the yellow object. Try again with red and blue, then swap the objects around.
- Try it alone (7 minutes): Ask your child to find a color around the room: “Can you bring me something green?” Try up to three colors. Give a clue or point nearby if needed.
- Recap (3 minutes): Hold up two objects and ask, “What color is this?” Finish by naming the colors you found together.
Quick check: Show three familiar objects and ask your child to point to one named color, such as, “Can you point to blue?”
Make it easier: Offer just two objects and name the color as your child points.
Make it harder: Ask your child to find two objects that are the same color.
