Objective

By the end of this lesson, the kindergarten student will be able to successfully cook a mug cake while learning about health and nutrition.

Materials and Prep

  • Microwave-safe mug
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing
  • Ingredients for mug cake (e.g., flour, sugar, cocoa powder, milk, oil)
  • Access to a microwave
  • Adult supervision

Prior to the lesson, make sure the student is familiar with basic kitchen safety rules and understands how to measure ingredients accurately.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of a mug cake and explain that it is a single-serving cake that can be made quickly in a microwave.
  2. Show the student all the ingredients needed for the mug cake and discuss their individual roles (e.g., flour provides structure, sugar adds sweetness).
  3. Guide the student through the process of measuring and combining the ingredients in the mixing bowl.
  4. Explain the importance of following the recipe and measuring accurately to ensure the mug cake turns out delicious.
  5. Once the batter is ready, assist the student in pouring it into the microwave-safe mug.
  6. Show the student how to safely put the mug in the microwave and set the appropriate cooking time.
  7. While the mug cake is cooking, discuss the concept of moderation and how treats like cake can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.
  8. After the mug cake is cooked and cooled, let the student enjoy their creation!
