Objective

By the end of this lesson, the homeschool student will be able to make connections between language arts and numbers, and understand how numbers can be used in reading and storytelling.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper or notebook

No prior knowledge or preparation is necessary for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Number Storytelling:

Ask the student to think of a favorite story or book they have read. Have them write down the title and author at the top of a blank page. Then, ask them to identify any numbers that are mentioned in the story (e.g., ages of characters, number of objects, page numbers, etc.). Have them make a list of these numbers and write a short description of how they are used in the story.

  2. Word Math:

Provide the student with a list of number words (e.g., one, two, three, etc.). Ask them to write a sentence using each number word and a word related to reading or language arts. For example, "Two characters went on an adventure." Encourage them to be creative and use their imagination.

  3. Number Hunt:

Give the student a book or a passage from a book. Ask them to read through the text and identify any numbers that they come across. Have them underline or circle the numbers and write a short explanation of how they are used in the text. This activity helps them practice reading comprehension while focusing on numbers.
