Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to solve problems related to video games, specifically Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or gaming console with Minecraft installed
  • Paper and pencil for note-taking and calculations
  • Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Calculate the total number of blocks needed to build a structure in Minecraft.

Ask the student to design a structure in Minecraft, such as a house or a tower. Have them determine the number of blocks required for each component of the structure (walls, roof, floor, etc.) and calculate the total number of blocks needed for the entire structure.

  2. Activity 2: Determine the time required to complete a task in Minecraft.

Provide the student with a specific task in Minecraft, such as mining a certain number of blocks or crafting a set of items. Ask them to estimate the time it would take to complete the task and then calculate the actual time taken based on their in-game performance.

  3. Activity 3: Calculate the cost of resources in Minecraft.

Assign a value (in imaginary currency) to each type of resource in Minecraft, such as wood, stone, or diamonds. Have the student determine the total cost of acquiring a specific set of resources by multiplying the quantity of each resource by its assigned value.

Twelfth Grade Talking Points

  • "Arithmetic skills are essential in various real-life scenarios, including video games like Minecraft."
  • "Understanding how to calculate the number of blocks needed for a structure helps in planning and resource management within the game."
  • "Estimating and calculating time can improve efficiency and productivity in completing tasks within Minecraft."
  • "Assigning values to resources and calculating their costs enhances decision-making skills and economic understanding in the game."
  • "Applying arithmetic concepts in Minecraft can also be a fun way to reinforce and practice mathematical skills."
