Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts in a fun and engaging way while exploring the world of Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft game
  • Pen and paper
  • Calculator (optional)

Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) is required.

Activities

  1. Building with Blocks: Use Minecraft to create structures using different types of blocks. Practice addition and subtraction by counting the number of blocks used and calculating the total or remaining number of blocks.
  2. Mining for Resources: Explore the Minecraft world and mine for resources such as coal, iron, and diamonds. Use multiplication to determine the total number of resources collected based on the number of blocks mined.
  3. Crafting Items: Experiment with crafting different items in Minecraft. Use division to calculate the number of items that can be crafted based on the available resources.
  4. Trading with Villagers: Interact with the in-game villagers and engage in trading activities. Practice mental math skills by calculating the total value of items traded or determining the number of items that can be obtained with a specific amount of currency.
  5. Enchanting and Experience Points: Learn about enchanting items in Minecraft and how experience points are earned. Use addition and subtraction to track the experience gained or lost during gameplay.

Twelfth Grade Talking Points

  • "In Minecraft, you can use arithmetic to build and create structures. For example, if you want to build a wall that is 10 blocks long and each block is 1 meter wide, how long will the wall be in meters?"
  • "When mining for resources, you can use multiplication to determine the total number of resources collected. If you mine 5 blocks of coal and each block gives you 3 pieces of coal, how many pieces of coal did you collect in total?"
  • "Crafting items in Minecraft requires division. If you have 12 iron ingots and each item requires 2 ingots, how many items can you craft?"
  • "In the game, you can trade with villagers. Practice mental math skills by calculating the total value of items traded. If an item is worth 5 emeralds and you trade 3 items, how many emeralds did you spend?"
  • "Enchanting items in Minecraft requires experience points. Use addition and subtraction to keep track of your experience gained or lost. If you had 15 experience points and lost 7 points, how many experience points do you have now?"
