Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to solve problems related to animals.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Animal Population

Research the population of different animal species in a particular region. Choose at least three different animals and find their current population numbers. Use this information to create word problems involving addition and subtraction. For example, if the population of Animal A is 500 and the population of Animal B is 350, how many more animals does Animal A have compared to Animal B?

  2. Activity 2: Animal Measurements

Measure the length, height, or weight of different animals. Create multiplication and division problems based on these measurements. For example, if an animal weighs 100 kilograms and another animal weighs 25 kilograms, how many times heavier is the first animal compared to the second?

  3. Activity 3: Animal Feeding

Research the daily food consumption of different animals. Use this information to create arithmetic problems involving multiplication and division. For example, if an animal eats 2 kilograms of food per day and there are 7 days in a week, how many kilograms of food does it consume in a week?

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
  • "We can use arithmetic to solve real-life problems, such as those related to animals."
  • "Addition is the operation of combining two or more numbers to find their total."
  • "Subtraction is the operation of taking one number away from another to find the difference."
  • "Multiplication is the operation of repeated addition. It is used to find the total when we have equal groups of numbers."
  • "Division is the operation of sharing a number equally into groups or finding how many times one number is contained in another."
  • "By applying arithmetic concepts, we can solve problems related to animal populations, measurements, and food consumption."
