Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic chemistry concepts involved in baking a cake.

Materials and Prep

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing
  • Baking pan
  • Oven
  • Ingredients for cake (flour, sugar, eggs, butter, baking powder, vanilla extract)
  • Apron and oven mitts (for safety)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have all the materials ready and read the recipe for the cake.

Activities

  1. Measure the ingredients:

    • Using the measuring cups and spoons, measure the required amount of flour, sugar, baking powder, and butter as mentioned in the recipe.
  2. Mix the ingredients:

    • In the mixing bowl, combine the measured ingredients and mix them using a whisk or spoon until they are well blended.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla extract:

    • Crack the eggs into a separate bowl, check for any shell pieces, and then add them to the mixing bowl.
    • Add the required amount of vanilla extract to the mixing bowl.
  4. Blend everything together:

    • Continuing to mix, blend all the ingredients together until you have a smooth batter.
  5. Preheat the oven and bake the cake:

    • Preheat the oven to the temperature mentioned in the recipe.
    • Pour the cake batter into a greased baking pan and place it in the oven.
    • Bake the cake for the time specified in the recipe.
  6. Cool, decorate, and enjoy:

    • Once the cake is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool.
    • Once cooled, you can decorate the cake with frosting or any other desired toppings.
    • Finally, enjoy your delicious homemade cake!
