Materials and Prep
- Small pots or containers
- Soil
- Seeds (e.g., flower or vegetable seeds)
- Watering can or spray bottle
- Labels or markers
- Gardening gloves (optional)
Before starting the lesson, make sure to have the materials ready and find a suitable area for planting.
Activities
- Introduction to Gardening
- Planting Seeds
- Care and Observation
- Journaling
Start by discussing what gardening is and why it is important. Explain how plants need water, sunlight, and nutrients from the soil to grow.
Have the student fill the pots with soil, leaving some space at the top. Help them plant the seeds according to the instructions on the seed packets. Encourage them to water the pots gently.
Discuss the importance of taking care of plants. Teach the student how to water the plants regularly and observe their growth. Explain that plants need sunlight to make food through a process called photosynthesis.
Provide the student with a journal or notebook to record their observations. Encourage them to draw pictures or write about the changes they notice in their plants over time.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Plants need water, sunlight, and soil to grow. Just like we need food, plants need nutrients from the soil to stay healthy."
- "When we plant seeds, they grow into plants. We can watch them grow and take care of them."
- "Plants make their own food using sunlight. It's like they have their own kitchen inside their leaves!"
- "We can keep track of how our plants are growing by writing and drawing in our garden journal. It helps us remember what we did and what we see."
