Objective

By the end of this lesson, the fifth-grade homeschool student will develop an understanding of the responsibilities involved in helping care for a newborn sibling and gain knowledge about basic newborn care.

Materials and Prep

  • Doll or stuffed animal
  • Blanket
  • Baby clothes
  • Baby bottle
  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Optional: Baby care book or online resources

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has some basic knowledge about newborns, such as their fragility and the importance of proper hygiene.

Activities

  1. Discuss the importance of helping care for a newborn sibling and how it can contribute to their growth and development.
  2. Show the student how to swaddle a doll or stuffed animal using a blanket, explaining the reasons behind swaddling and the importance of keeping a baby warm and secure.
  3. Practice dressing the doll or stuffed animal in baby clothes, emphasizing the need for gentle movements and avoiding any discomfort for the baby.
  4. Explain the process of feeding a newborn using a bottle, demonstrating proper holding techniques and the importance of burping the baby after feeding.
  5. Show the student how to change a diaper, using a doll or stuffed animal and explaining the importance of cleanliness and hygiene during diaper changes.
  6. Discuss the role of siblings in comforting and soothing a newborn, encouraging the student to think of ways they can help create a calm and peaceful environment for their sibling.
