Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts through a fun painting activity.
Materials and Prep
- Paint (assorted colors)
- Paintbrushes
- White paper or canvas
- Apron or old clothes to protect from paint splatters
- Optional: Number stencils or stickers
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduce the concept of addition by explaining that we can combine different colors of paint to create new colors.
- Ask the student to choose two colors and mix them together on a palette or in a small container. Let them observe how the colors blend and create a new color.
- Encourage the student to paint a picture using the newly created color. They can use their fingers or a paintbrush.
- Repeat the process with different color combinations to create more new colors.
- Introduce the concept of subtraction by explaining that we can remove paint from the paper to reveal the original color.
- Ask the student to paint a picture using multiple colors. After it dries, provide them with a wet sponge or cloth to gently remove some of the paint and uncover parts of the original color.
- Discuss the changes in colors and patterns as they subtract paint from the picture.

- "That's right, we made orange! Let's use it to paint a picture of a sunset."
- "Now, let's talk about subtraction. We can remove paint from our picture to reveal the original color."
- "Take a wet sponge or cloth and gently rub it on the paper. Look how the paint disappears and the original color shows through!"
- "You did an amazing job exploring addition and subtraction through painting! What other colors and patterns can you create?"
