Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts through a fun painting activity.

Materials and Prep

  • Paint (assorted colors)
  • Paintbrushes
  • White paper or canvas
  • Apron or old clothes to protect from paint splatters
  • Optional: Number stencils or stickers

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of addition by explaining that we can combine different colors of paint to create new colors.
  2. Ask the student to choose two colors and mix them together on a palette or in a small container. Let them observe how the colors blend and create a new color.
  3. Encourage the student to paint a picture using the newly created color. They can use their fingers or a paintbrush.
  4. Repeat the process with different color combinations to create more new colors.
  5. Introduce the concept of subtraction by explaining that we can remove paint from the paper to reveal the original color.
  6. Ask the student to paint a picture using multiple colors. After it dries, provide them with a wet sponge or cloth to gently remove some of the paint and uncover parts of the original color.
  7. Discuss the changes in colors and patterns as they subtract paint from the picture.
