Materials and Prep

  • Computer or tablet with internet access
  • Camera or smartphone for recording videos
  • Art supplies (e.g., paper, markers, crayons)
  • Access to a natural outdoor environment (e.g., backyard, park)

Activities

  1. Introduction: Start by watching a short educational YouTube video about the importance of taking care of the environment. Discuss with the student why it is important to learn about environmental science and share ideas for making their own YouTube videos.

  2. Brainstorming: Help the student brainstorm different environmental science topics they are interested in. Encourage them to think about things like recycling, plants, animals, and conservation. Write down their ideas on a piece of paper.

  3. Outdoor Exploration: Take the student outside to explore a natural environment. Encourage them to observe plants, animals, and any other interesting aspects of nature. Have them take photos or make drawings of what they find.

  4. Video Planning: Using the brainstormed ideas and the outdoor exploration experience, guide the student in planning their YouTube video. Help them create a simple script or outline of what they want to talk about and show in their video.

  5. Video Recording: Assist the student in recording their YouTube video. They can use their drawings, photos, or props to illustrate their points. Encourage them to speak clearly and confidently.

  6. Video Editing: Teach the student basic video editing skills using free online software or apps. Help them trim the video, add titles or captions, and enhance the visuals if desired.

  7. Publishing: Assist the student in uploading their video to their YouTube channel. Discuss privacy settings and responsible online behavior. Celebrate their accomplishment!
