Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use different parts of speech in sentences, while incorporating your love for drawing.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils or crayons
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction: Begin by discussing the different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.) with your child. Show them examples and explain their functions in sentences.
- Draw and Label: Ask your child to draw a picture of their favorite animal or object. Encourage them to be creative and detailed.
- Identify Parts of Speech: Once the drawing is complete, have your child label different parts of the drawing using the appropriate parts of speech. For example, they can label the animal as a noun, describe its characteristics using adjectives, or add action words as verbs.
- Create Sentences: Next, have your child create sentences using the labeled parts of speech from their drawing. They can write the sentences directly on the paper or on a separate sheet.
- Share and Discuss: After completing the sentences, have your child share their drawing and sentences with you. Discuss how the different parts of speech enhance the description and meaning of the sentences.
Third Grade Talking Points

- "Nouns are words that name people, animals, places, or things. Can you find a noun in your drawing?"
- "Verbs are action words that show what someone or something is doing. Can you think of a verb to describe an action in your drawing?"
- "Adjectives are words that describe or give more information about nouns. Can you find an adjective to describe something in your drawing?"
- "By using different parts of speech in our sentences, we can make our writing more interesting and engaging."
