Materials and Prep
- Alphabet flashcards or letter cut-outs
- Whiteboard or chalkboard
- Writing utensils
- Printed alphabet chart
Before starting the lesson, make sure you are familiar with the names and sounds of the letters of the alphabet.
Activities
- Introduce the alphabet: Show the alphabet flashcards or letter cut-outs to the student. Say the name of each letter while pointing to it. Encourage the student to repeat after you.
- Letter sounds: Go through each letter again, but this time focus on the sounds they make. For example, say "A says /a/" and have the student repeat after you. Practice the sounds of at least five letters.
- Letter recognition: Show the printed alphabet chart to the student. Ask them to identify specific letters by pointing to them. Give praise and encouragement for correct answers.
- Letter writing: Use the whiteboard or chalkboard to write a letter. Explain to the student how to write it while they observe. Then, let them try writing the letter on their own using the writing utensils.
