Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the principles of intuitive and mindful eating and be able to apply them to their daily lives.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to a kitchen or food preparation area
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research

Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of nutrition and healthy eating habits.

Activities

  1. Research and Define: Have the student research and define the concepts of intuitive eating and mindful eating. They should write down their definitions and be prepared to share them with the class.

  2. Meal Planning: Ask the student to plan a balanced meal using only their intuition and mindfulness. They should consider their hunger, cravings, and nutritional needs. Encourage them to think about the colors, textures, and flavors of the foods they choose.

  3. Meal Preparation: In the kitchen or food preparation area, guide the student in preparing the meal they planned. Emphasize the importance of being present and mindful during the cooking process. Discuss the benefits of cooking at home and the control it gives over ingredients and portion sizes.

  4. Tasting and Reflection: After the meal is prepared, have the student taste and savor each bite mindfully. Encourage them to pay attention to their senses and the physical and emotional responses they experience. Discuss the satisfaction and enjoyment of eating in a mindful way.
