By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to identify and describe different animals and their habitats.
Materials and Prep
- Animal picture cards or books
- Paper and crayons
- Optional: Animal toys
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with different animal names and their habitats.
Activities
- Show the toddler different animal picture cards or books and talk about each animal. Ask questions like "What sound does this animal make?" or "Where do you think this animal lives?" Encourage the toddler to name the animals and describe their characteristics.
- Using paper and crayons, ask the toddler to draw their favorite animal. Assist them in identifying the animal's habitat and drawing it in the background.
- If available, let the toddler play with animal toys and create a small pretend habitat for the animals. Encourage them to describe what the animals are doing in their habitat.
Toddler Grade Talking Points

- "Can you make the sound of a lion? Roar!"
- "Where do you think a fish lives? In the water!"
- "Let's draw your favorite animal. What color is it?"
- "Oh, you drew a lion! Lions live in the jungle. Can you draw some trees in the background?"
- "What do you think the lion is doing in its habitat? Maybe it's taking a nap or looking for food."
- "Now, let's pretend these toys are animals. How can we create a habitat for them? What do they need to be happy?"
- "Great job! You learned about different animals and their habitats today."
