Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the general biology of space and planets.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer or tablet with internet access
  • Pen and paper

Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of biology concepts.

Activities

  1. Research and Presentation:

Choose a specific planet or celestial body of interest and research its biology-related aspects such as the possibility of life, extremophiles, or adaptations required for survival. Create a presentation summarizing your findings and present it to a family member or friend.

  2. Design Your Own Alien Life Form:

Imagine an alien life form that could potentially exist on a planet outside our solar system. Draw and describe your alien, including its physical characteristics, adaptations, and how it obtains energy and reproduces. Be creative and think outside the box!

  3. Debate: Life on Mars

Engage in a friendly debate with a family member or friend. Take turns presenting arguments for and against the existence of past or present life on Mars. Use scientific evidence and logical reasoning to support your claims.

Twelfth Grade Talking Points

  • "The study of astrobiology involves the search for life beyond Earth and the understanding of how life originated and evolved."
  • "Biology plays a crucial role in determining the habitability of a planet, as it involves studying the conditions necessary for life to exist."
  • "Adaptations of organisms on Earth can provide insights into the potential adaptations required for life to survive in extreme environments on other planets."
  • "The discovery of extremophiles, organisms that thrive in extreme conditions on Earth, has expanded our understanding of the limits of life and the possibility of life existing elsewhere in the universe."
  • "The search for extraterrestrial life involves exploring environments on other planets, moons, and celestial bodies that may harbor the necessary conditions for life."
  • "Astrobiology combines knowledge from various scientific disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics, and astronomy, to study the potential for life in the universe."
