Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic concepts of biology through fun and interactive activities related to play.
Materials and Prep
- Toy animals or plants
- Empty jars or containers
- Water
- Soil or sand
- Colored pencils or markers
- Plain paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Animal or Plant Sorting:
Collect different toy animals or plants. Sort them into groups based on whether they are living or non-living. Discuss the characteristics of living things (movement, growth, reproduction) and non-living things (no movement, no growth, no reproduction).
-
Planting Seeds:
Fill a jar or container with soil or sand. Plant a seed in it and water it regularly. Observe and discuss how plants grow from seeds, and the importance of water and sunlight for their growth.
-
Draw and Label:
Ask the student to choose a living thing they like, such as an animal or a plant. Provide plain paper and colored pencils or markers. Have them draw and label the different parts of their chosen living thing, such as the head, body, legs, leaves, or petals.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Living things can move, grow, and reproduce. Non-living things cannot do these things."
- "Plants grow from seeds. They need water and sunlight to grow."
- "Animals and plants have different body parts. For example, animals have heads, bodies, and legs, while plants have leaves and petals."
