Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to build a racetrack using arithmetic skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Start by drawing a large rectangle on the paper to represent the racetrack.

  2. Divide the racetrack into sections using vertical lines. Each section should be labeled with a number.

  3. Choose a starting point on the racetrack and mark it with an "S".

  4. Decide on a finish line and mark it with an "F".

  5. Now, using arithmetic skills, determine the length of each section of the racetrack. For example, you can use addition or subtraction to decide how many units long each section should be.

  6. Write the length of each section next to the corresponding number label.

  7. Once you have determined the length of each section, use your pencil to draw a visual representation of the length. For example, if a section is 3 units long, draw 3 small lines next to the number label.

  8. Continue this process for all the sections until you reach the finish line.

  9. Finally, count the total number of units in the racetrack to find out how long it is.
