Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills while building a Lego dinosaur.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks
- Building instructions for a Lego dinosaur
- Paper and pencil
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have all the necessary Lego bricks and the building instructions for the dinosaur. Also, have a paper and pencil ready for any calculations or measurements.
Activities
- Start by familiarizing yourself with the Lego dinosaur building instructions. Look at the different steps and try to understand how the pieces fit together.
- Count the number of different types of Lego bricks required for each step. Write down the numbers on a piece of paper.
- Use addition to find the total number of Lego bricks needed to complete the dinosaur. Add up the numbers you wrote down in the previous step.
- Measure the length, width, and height of the Lego dinosaur once it is built. Write down the measurements on a piece of paper.
- Practice subtraction by finding the difference between the height of the Lego dinosaur and the height of a regular dinosaur. Discuss how the Lego dinosaur is smaller in size.
Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun building a Lego dinosaur while also using our math skills."
- "We will count the different types of Lego bricks needed for each step."
- "Then, we will add up the numbers to find the total number of Lego bricks required."
- "After building the dinosaur, we will measure its length, width, and height using a ruler."
- "We will also compare the height of the Lego dinosaur to the height of a real dinosaur using subtraction."
- "Remember, math is all around us, even when we are building with Legos!"
