Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the properties of water and explore various water-related concepts through hands-on activities.
Materials and Prep
- A large basin or container
- A small cup or scoop
- Water
- Various objects that float and sink (e.g., toy boat, rubber duck, rock)
- A towel or sponge for clean-up
Prior to the lesson, ensure that the materials are easily accessible and the work area is protected from water spills.
Activities
- Float or Sink: Fill the basin with water and gather the objects that float and sink. Ask your child to predict whether each object will float or sink before placing them in the water. Observe and discuss the results.
- Water Scooping: Fill the basin with water again and provide your child with the cup or scoop. Encourage them to scoop water from the basin and pour it back. Discuss how the water changes shape and moves.
- Splish Splash: Let your child freely explore the water by splashing, pouring, and playing with their hands. Encourage them to describe how the water feels and moves.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Water is a special liquid that can be found in many places like rivers, lakes, and even in our homes."
- "Some things float on water, like a boat or a rubber duck, while others sink, like a rock or a heavy toy."
- "When we scoop water, it moves from one place to another. It can change shape and can be poured."
- "Water can feel wet and cool. It can also make splashing sounds when we play with it."
