Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply statistical concepts to analyze data related to the State Fair.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Access to the internet or a library for research
  • State Fair data (attendance numbers, ticket prices, etc.)

Prior knowledge of basic mathematical operations and concepts such as mean, median, and mode will be helpful.

Activities

  1. Research: Begin by researching the State Fair. Find information on attendance numbers, ticket prices, and any other relevant data.
  2. Data Collection: Create a table or spreadsheet to record the data you have found. Organize the information into categories such as year, attendance, ticket prices, etc.
  3. Data Analysis: Calculate the mean, median, and mode of the attendance numbers and ticket prices. Compare the results and discuss what they indicate about the State Fair.
  4. Data Visualization: Create a bar graph or line graph to represent the attendance numbers over the years. Use different colors or patterns to represent different ticket price categories.
  5. Interpretation: Analyze the graph and discuss any trends or patterns you observe. What do these trends suggest about the popularity of the State Fair?

Ninth Grade Talking Points

  • "Statistics is the branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data."
  • "Mean is a measure of central tendency, which represents the average value of a set of numbers."
  • "Median is another measure of central tendency, which represents the middle value of a set of numbers when they are arranged in ascending or descending order."
  • "Mode is the value that appears most frequently in a set of numbers."
  • "By analyzing data and calculating statistical measures, we can gain insights and make informed decisions."
  • "Graphs and charts are visual representations of data that help us understand patterns and relationships."
  • "Interpreting data and graphs allows us to draw conclusions and make predictions based on the information presented."
