Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills in a fun and engaging way while exploring concepts related to Fortnite.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Blank paper or notebook
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Basic knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Activities

  1. Fortnite Math Word Problems:

Create a list of word problems related to Fortnite. For example:

    • "If you have 5 shields and you find 3 more, how many shields do you have in total?"
    • "If you have 10 ammo and you use 4 bullets, how many bullets do you have left?"

Solve each word problem using the appropriate arithmetic operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division). Write down the equations and the answers in your notebook.

  2. Fortnite Number Patterns:

Think about number patterns in Fortnite. For example:

    • "If you earn 50 V-Bucks for completing a daily challenge, how many V-Bucks will you earn after completing 3 daily challenges?"
    • "If you earn 100 experience points for eliminating an opponent, how many experience points will you earn after eliminating 5 opponents?"

Identify the pattern and write down the equations to find the total V-Bucks or experience points earned. Solve the equations and record your answers.

  3. Fortnite Score Calculation:

Think about how scores are calculated in Fortnite. For example:

    • "If you earn 10 points for a kill and 5 points for an assist, how many points will you earn if you get 2 kills and 3 assists?"
    • "If you lose 3 points for every time you get eliminated, how many points will you have left if you had 20 points and got eliminated 4 times?"

Calculate the total score using the given information and record your answers.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Math is all around us, even in games like Fortnite!"
  • "We can use arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve problems in Fortnite."
  • "Word problems help us apply math skills to real-life situations, like figuring out how many shields or bullets we have."
  • "Number patterns can help us predict how many V-Bucks or experience points we will earn in Fortnite."
  • "Calculating scores in Fortnite can help us keep track of our progress and improve our gameplay."
