Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic concepts of calculus and apply them to your drawing activities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils or crayons
- Ruler
- Calculator (optional)
- No prior knowledge required
Activities
-
Activity 1: Lines and Curves
Draw different types of lines and curves on your paper. Experiment with straight lines, wavy lines, and curved lines. Observe how they look and how they differ from each other.
-
Activity 2: Measuring Lengths
Use a ruler to measure the length of different lines you drew in Activity 1. Write down the measurements next to each line. Compare the lengths of the lines and see if you notice any patterns or differences.
-
Activity 3: Adding and Subtracting Lengths
Combine two or more lines together and measure their total length. Try adding the lengths of two lines together, and then subtracting the length of one line from another. What happens to the total length?
-
Activity 4: Making Shapes
Use the lines and curves you drew earlier to create different shapes on your paper. Experiment with triangles, squares, circles, and other shapes. Can you find any shapes that have the same length on all sides?
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Lines can be straight, wavy, or curved. They can look different from each other."
- "We can use a ruler to measure the length of lines. We write down the numbers to remember the lengths."
- "When we add lengths together, the total length gets longer. When we subtract lengths, the total length gets shorter."
- "Shapes are made up of lines and curves. We can use them to create different shapes like triangles, squares, and circles."
