Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to real-life situations involving building with different materials indoors and outdoors.
Materials and Prep
- Building blocks or Legos
- Paper and pencil
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Outdoor space (if available)
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Activities
-
Indoor Building Challenge:
Use the building blocks or Legos to construct a structure of your choice. Once you have finished building, count the total number of blocks used and write it down. Then, calculate the sum, difference, product, and quotient of the number of blocks used with a partner or family member.
-
Outdoor Measurement Task:
Head outdoors and find different objects or areas that you can measure. Use the ruler or measuring tape to measure the length, width, and height of each object or area. Write down the measurements and then perform various arithmetic operations with the measurements, such as adding the lengths of two objects or multiplying the width and height of an area.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and operations."
- "We use addition when we want to find the total of two or more numbers. For example, if we have 3 blocks and add 5 more blocks, we get a total of 8 blocks."
- "Subtraction is used when we want to find the difference between two numbers. If we have 8 blocks and remove 3 blocks, we are left with 5 blocks."
- "Multiplication helps us find the product of two or more numbers. If we have 4 groups of 2 blocks each, we can multiply 4 by 2 to get a total of 8 blocks."
- "Division is used to divide a number into equal parts. If we have 12 blocks and want to share them equally among 3 friends, we can divide 12 by 3 to give each friend 4 blocks."
