Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to engage in messy play while improving your language arts and reading skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Old newspapers or plastic tablecloth to protect the play area
  • Non-toxic washable paint or food coloring
  • Large sheets of paper or cardboard
  • Paintbrushes or sponges
  • Optional: smocks or old clothes
  • Water and towels for cleaning up

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a designated area where you can engage in messy play without worrying about making a mess. Wear appropriate clothing that you don't mind getting dirty.

Activities

  1. Painting with Words
  2. Spread the large sheets of paper or cardboard on the protected play area. Dip the paintbrushes or sponges into the paint or food coloring and use them to write letters, words, or even short sentences on the paper. As you paint, say the letter sounds or read the words aloud.

  3. Sight Word Splash
  4. Choose a few sight words that you have been practicing. Write each word in large letters on the paper using the paint or food coloring. Once the words are dry, take turns splashing water on the words and saying them out loud. The water will reveal the hidden words!

  5. Storytelling with Paint
  6. Using your fingers or brushes, create colorful shapes and patterns on the paper. Let your imagination flow and see if you can find a story within the paint. Once you have finished painting, tell a story based on what you see in the colors and shapes.
