Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic skills to baking bread with a child, including measuring ingredients and adjusting recipe quantities.
Materials and Prep
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Mixing bowls
- Baking pans
- Oven
- Recipe for bread
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Activities
Read through the bread recipe together, discussing the different ingredients and their quantities.
Practice measuring ingredients using the measuring cups and spoons. Have the student measure out different quantities of flour, water, yeast, and salt.
Show the student how to mix the ingredients together in a mixing bowl, using the appropriate arithmetic operations to adjust the recipe quantities if needed.
Once the dough is ready, guide the student in shaping it into loaves and placing them in the baking pans.
Preheat the oven and bake the bread according to the recipe instructions, discussing the importance of following the baking time and temperature.
Allow the bread to cool and then enjoy the freshly baked bread together!
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "When baking bread, we need to measure the ingredients accurately to ensure the bread turns out delicious."
- "We can use measuring cups and spoons to measure different quantities of ingredients."
- "If the recipe calls for 2 cups of flour and we only have 1 cup, we need to multiply the other ingredients by 2 to maintain the right proportions."
- "When mixing the ingredients, we can use addition and subtraction to adjust the quantities if needed."
- "It's important to follow the baking time and temperature specified in the recipe to ensure the bread is cooked properly."
