Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to bake bread with a child while improving their reading skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking ingredients (flour, yeast, salt, sugar, etc.)
  • Baking pan
  • Oven
  • Recipe for bread
  • Aprons
  • Washcloth or towel

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has basic knowledge of measuring and following a recipe. Ensure all materials are ready and accessible.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of baking bread and its importance in different cultures.
  2. Read a children's book about baking bread together, such as "Bread Comes to Life" by George Levenson.
  3. Discuss the steps involved in baking bread and the ingredients needed.
  4. Have the student read the recipe out loud, emphasizing key words and instructions.
  5. Guide the student through the process of measuring and combining the ingredients.
  6. Encourage the student to read each step of the recipe as they go along.
  7. Discuss the changes that occur during the bread-making process, such as the dough rising and the bread browning in the oven.
  8. While the bread is baking, have the student write a short paragraph describing the experience and what they learned.
  9. Once the bread is ready, enjoy the freshly baked bread together and reflect on the process.
