By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the importance of food and nutrition in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to the internet (for research)
  • Food labels from various packaged food items
  • Healthy recipe books or websites (optional)

Activities

  1. Food Diary

Ask the student to keep a food diary for one week. They should record everything they eat and drink, including portion sizes and any snacks. At the end of the week, review the diary together and discuss the nutritional value of the foods consumed.

  2. Label Reading

Provide the student with food labels from various packaged food items. Ask them to analyze the labels and identify the key nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Discuss the importance of reading food labels for making informed food choices.

  3. Recipe Makeover

Encourage the student to choose a favorite recipe and suggest modifications to make it healthier. They can research alternative ingredients or cooking methods that would reduce the amount of unhealthy fats, sugars, or sodium in the recipe. Ask them to present their modified recipe and explain the nutritional improvements.
