Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and locate different countries on a map, with a focus on the United States of America.

Materials and Prep

  • World map or globe
  • Printed maps of the United States
  • Pencils and coloring materials
  • Index cards
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of countries and explain that each country has its own unique characteristics, culture, and geography.
  2. Show the student a world map or globe and point out the different continents. Discuss how countries are located within these continents.
  3. Focus on the United States of America. Provide the student with printed maps of the United States and have them color each state.
  4. Using index cards, write the names of different countries. Cut out these cards and have the student match each country to its location on the world map or globe.
  5. Encourage the student to research and learn more about one specific country of their choice. They can create a small presentation or poster to share their findings.
