Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and read simple words.
Materials and Prep
- Letter flashcards
- Paper and pencils
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Introduce the letter flashcards to the student. Show them one letter at a time and ask them to repeat the letter sound after you.
For example, show the letter "A" and say, "This is the letter A. Can you say 'a'?"
-
Once the student is familiar with the letter sounds, shuffle the flashcards and hold them up one by one.
Ask the student to identify the letter and say its sound.
-
Now, write some simple words on a piece of paper. Start with three-letter words such as "cat" or "dog".
Read the word aloud to the student and ask them to identify the letters in the word.
Encourage the student to sound out the word by blending the letter sounds together.
-
Repeat step 3 with different words, gradually increasing the complexity.
For example, you can move on to four-letter words like "bird" or "frog".
