Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
No additional materials or prior knowledge are required for this lesson.
Activities
Start by brainstorming a list of words related to music. Think about different genres, instruments, and musical terms. Write down as many words as you can in 5 minutes.
Choose one word from your list and write a short story or poem that incorporates that word. Be creative and use descriptive language to bring your piece to life.
Read your story or poem aloud. Pay attention to the rhythm and flow of your words. Does it remind you of any particular musical style or tempo?
Find a piece of music that matches the mood or theme of your story or poem. Listen to the music while reading your piece again. How does the music enhance your understanding or emotional connection to your own writing?
Third Grade Talking Points
"Language arts is not just about reading books and writing stories. It can also be connected to other forms of art, like music."
"When we write stories or poems, we can use descriptive language to create vivid images and evoke emotions, just like music can."
"Reading our own writing aloud helps us hear the rhythm and flow of our words, similar to how musicians listen to the beat and melody of a song."
"Listening to music while reading our own writing can enhance our understanding and emotional connection to our own words, just like how music can enhance the mood or message of a movie or play."
