Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve basic arithmetic problems while having fun exploring the world of Harry Potter.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Harry Potter-themed worksheets (downloadable from the internet)
- Basic knowledge of addition and subtraction
Activities
- Harry Potter Math Quiz: Create a Harry Potter-themed math quiz with questions related to addition and subtraction. For example, "Harry has 5 chocolate frogs and Hermione gives him 3 more. How many chocolate frogs does Harry have now?" Let the student solve the problems and provide them with immediate feedback.
- Potions Ingredients: Create a list of potion ingredients from the Harry Potter series. Assign each ingredient a numerical value (e.g., unicorn hair = 10, dragon scale = 5). Ask the student to add or subtract the values of different ingredients to find the total value of a potion.
- Sorting Hat Addition: Divide the student into one of the four Hogwarts houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin). Give them addition problems and let them earn points for their house for each correct answer. The house with the most points at the end wins.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Math is like magic! We can use numbers to solve problems and make things easier."

- "Adding means putting numbers together, like when we combine chocolate frogs."
- "Subtracting means taking away, like when Hermione gives Harry some of her chocolate frogs."
- "By practicing addition and subtraction, we can become math wizards just like Harry and his friends!"
