Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the excretory system through a fun analogy.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Brainstorming
Start by brainstorming with your student about the excretory system. Ask them what they already know and write down their responses on a piece of paper.
-
Activity 2: Analogy Creation
Explain to your student that an analogy is a comparison between two things that are similar in some way. Ask them to think of an everyday object or situation that can be compared to the excretory system. For example, they can compare it to a garbage disposal or a recycling bin.
Have your student draw a picture or write a short paragraph explaining their analogy. Encourage them to be creative and think about how the excretory system works in a similar way to their chosen object or situation.
-
Activity 3: Presentation
Give your student the opportunity to present their analogy to you or any other family members. They can explain why they chose that particular object or situation and how it relates to the excretory system. Encourage them to use their drawing or written paragraph to support their explanation.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "The excretory system is responsible for removing waste from our bodies, just like a garbage disposal removes waste from the kitchen."
- "Our kidneys are like filters, they help clean our blood and remove waste, similar to how a water filter cleans impurities from water."
- "Just like a recycling bin separates different types of materials, our excretory system separates waste products and sends them to the appropriate organs for elimination."
- "The bladder is like a storage tank, it holds the urine until we are ready to go to the bathroom, much like a water tank holds water until we need it."
- "Our skin also plays a role in excretion. It helps us sweat and get rid of excess heat, similar to how a fan cools us down by blowing air."
