Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create an immune monopoly game, understanding the basic concepts of the immune system and its role in protecting the body.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank paper or cardboard
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Imagination and creativity!

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the immune system and its components. You can research or use your science textbook for reference.

Activities

  1. Brainstorm: Think about different components of the immune system, such as white blood cells, antibodies, and pathogens. Draw and label these components on your blank paper or cardboard.
  2. Create Game Cards: Cut out small rectangles from the remaining paper or cardboard. On each card, write down different scenarios or challenges related to the immune system. For example, "You encountered a virus. Lose one turn." or "Your white blood cells fought off bacteria. Move ahead two spaces."
  3. Create Game Board: Design and draw a colorful game board on your blank paper or cardboard. Divide the board into spaces and add illustrations or labels to represent different parts of the body or immune system.
  4. Play the Game: Invite a family member or friend to play your immune monopoly game. Take turns rolling a dice and moving your game piece along the board. Follow the instructions on the game cards and have fun while learning about the immune system!

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "The immune system is like our body's defense team. It helps protect us from harmful germs and keeps us healthy."
  • "White blood cells are like the soldiers of our immune system. They fight off germs and keep us safe."
  • "Antibodies are special proteins that help our immune system recognize and destroy harmful germs. They are like tiny superheroes!"
  • "Pathogens are germs that can make us sick. They can be bacteria, viruses, or other harmful microorganisms."
  • "When our immune system successfully fights off a germ, it's like winning a battle. But sometimes, germs can make us sick if our immune system is not strong enough."
  • "By playing the immune monopoly game, we can learn about the immune system and how it works to protect our bodies. It's a fun way to understand this important part of our biology!"
