Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to actively participate in small group gym games, improving your physical fitness and coordination.

Materials and Prep

  • Open space for physical activities
  • Cones or markers to set boundaries
  • Whistle or other signal to start and stop games
  • Water bottles for hydration

Activities

  1. Game: Traffic Lights

Instructions: Set up a playing area with boundaries using cones. Assign one student as the "Traffic Light" and the others as "Cars". The Traffic Light stands at one end of the playing area and the Cars stand at the opposite end. When the Traffic Light says "Green light", the Cars run towards the Traffic Light. When the Traffic Light says "Red light", the Cars must freeze. Any Car caught moving after the Red light is out of the game. The game continues until only one Car remains.

  2. Game: Shipwreck

Instructions: Mark a large circle on the ground as the "Island". All students stand inside the Island. When the teacher shouts "Shipwreck!", the students must quickly find a spot outside the Island, making sure they are not touching the ground. The teacher can remove a small part of the Island each round, making it smaller and challenging the students to find a spot. The last student remaining inside the Island becomes the teacher for the next round.

  3. Game: Relay Race

Instructions: Divide the students into teams. Set up a start line and a finish line. Each team member takes turns running from the start line to the finish line and back, tagging the next teammate to go. The first team to have all members complete the relay wins. Encourage teamwork and cheering for each other!

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Physical Education is important because it helps us stay healthy and strong."
  • "Small group gym games are a fun way to exercise and improve our coordination."
  • "In Traffic Lights, we practice following directions and reacting quickly to signals, just like real traffic."
  • "Shipwreck helps us with balance and agility as we try to find a spot outside the Island."
  • "Relay races are great for building teamwork and speed. We can encourage each other to do our best!"
