Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills through a fun game.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Counters or small objects to use as game pieces
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Game: "Math Race"
Draw a race track on the paper with a start and finish line. Divide the track into equal sections. Each section represents a math problem to solve. For example, you can have addition problems like 2 + 3, subtraction problems like 7 - 4, or even simple multiplication problems like 2 x 4.
Take turns rolling a dice or using a number generator to determine how many spaces to move forward. When you land on a section, solve the math problem before moving on. The first player to reach the finish line wins!
First Grade Talking Points
- "Math is all around us! We use math to count, add, subtract, and multiply. Today, we will practice these skills through a fun game."
- "In our game, we will pretend to be racers on a track. Each section of the track will have a math problem for us to solve. By solving the problems correctly, we can move forward and try to win the race!"
- "Let's start by drawing a race track on our paper. We will have a start line and a finish line. In between, we will divide the track into sections, and each section will have a math problem."
- "To move forward on the track, we will roll a dice or use a number generator. The number we get will tell us how many spaces to move. But remember, we have to solve the math problem on the section we land on before moving!"
- "The first player to reach the finish line will be the winner of our math race. Are you ready to have fun and practice your math skills?"
