Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and practice social emotional regulation through writing activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils or crayons
  • Writing prompts (optional)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have all the materials ready and choose a quiet and comfortable workspace.

Activities

  1. Start by discussing different emotions with your child. Ask them to name different feelings they experience, such as happy, sad, angry, or excited. Write down their responses on a piece of paper.

  2. Next, explain the concept of social emotional regulation. Discuss how it involves understanding and managing our emotions in different situations.

  3. Ask your child to choose one emotion from the list you created earlier. Have them draw a picture that represents that emotion. Encourage them to use colors and shapes that match the feeling.

  4. After they finish drawing, ask your child to write a sentence or two describing how they feel when experiencing that emotion. Remind them to use descriptive words to express their emotions.

  5. Optional: Provide writing prompts related to social emotional regulation. For example, "Write about a time when you felt proud of yourself" or "Describe a situation that made you feel frustrated and how you handled it."

  6. Encourage your child to share their drawing and writing with you or other family members. Discuss their artwork and the emotions they expressed through their writing.
