Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand what hibernation is and learn about animals that hibernate during winter.
Materials and Prep
- Whiteboard or paper
- Markers or crayons
- Pictures or toy animals representing hibernating animals (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Start by discussing what hibernation means. Explain that hibernation is a deep sleep that some animals go into during winter when it gets very cold. They sleep for a long time and wake up when it gets warm again.
- Draw or show pictures of different hibernating animals such as bears, bats, and hedgehogs. Talk about how these animals prepare for hibernation by eating a lot of food to store energy in their bodies.
- Ask the student to draw or act out how they think hibernating animals look when they sleep. Encourage creativity and imagination.
- Discuss the importance of hibernation for animals. Explain that hibernation helps them survive during the winter when food is scarce and the weather is harsh.
- Wrap up the lesson by asking the student to name other animals they think might hibernate and why.
