Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and interpret the storytelling elements in computer games and apply reading comprehension strategies to enhance their gaming experience.
Materials and Prep
- A computer or gaming console
- Access to a computer game of the student's choice
- No additional materials are required
Activities
-
Choose a computer game that the student enjoys and is familiar with. It can be an adventure, role-playing, or strategy game.
Have the student play the game for a predetermined amount of time, focusing on the storytelling elements within the game.
-
After playing, ask the student to reflect on the following questions:
- What is the main objective or goal of the game?
- Who are the main characters in the game?
- What challenges or obstacles do the characters face?
- How does the game use dialogue or cutscenes to advance the story?
- What emotions or themes does the game explore?
-
Encourage the student to write a short analysis of the storytelling elements in the game. They can discuss the plot, character development, and any other aspects they find interesting or important.
-
Have the student share their analysis with you or a fellow student. Discuss any similarities or differences in their interpretations.
-
As a follow-up activity, ask the student to create a short story or narrative based on the game they played. They can either continue the existing story or create a new adventure within the game's universe.
